Slim or Skinny? Tie up the Loose Ends with our Guide

Plain Hot Pink Skinny Tie by DQT

First of all, how do you tell the difference between a slim tie and a skinny tie?

Skinny ties are usually those with a width of no more than 2.5 inches (6.25 cm) whereas a tie classed as slim would be no more than 3 inches (7.5 cm).

Where to wear them

Although you will see skinny ties being worn at some formal events, they are best suited for more casual occasions. If you work in a creative industry and want to make an impression with new clients, a skinny tie could work well, but slim ties would be a much better choice for work or formal events.

Body types

Usually skinny ties look better on men that are tall and slim, but it’s worth remembering that the skinnier the tie, the more your skinny stature will be emphasised. If you want to appear a little broader, widen the tie slightly. Men with thick necks should avoid skinny ties as they can make them look as if they are choking.

Slim ties work better on men that are shorter. By taking away the attention from their height, a slim tie (not skinny) will help bring attention to their face.

How to wear them

One of the basic rules of wearing a tie with a suit is that the tie width should match the width of the lapels on your suit jacket. Skinny ties look best when worn with single breasted suits with only one or two buttons.

When knotting a skinny tie, make sure it’s asymmetrical and a little loose to keep the look more casual, using something like the four-in-hand knot. With slim ties and for a more formal but still trendy look, try a half-Windsor knot.

Accessories

Whilst tie bars may look good on some ties, we wouldn’t recommend wearing one on a tie that’s too skinny. Tie bars should always be narrower than the tie width, which means the accessory would be so small on a skinny tie that it probably wouldn’t get noticed. Tie bars are better suited on slim ties of about three inches in width and kept for formal occasions.
