Satin Accessories

In this informative installment of Know Your Fabric, we will be discussing everything there is to know about satin fabric and why it’s worth a try. Now, let’s get into it!

What is Satin Fabric?

To start, let’s clarify one thing first: the term “satin” is not a raw material, but rather a technique of weaving.

Choosing Satin Accessories

Satin is a unique weaving pattern where four threads are weaved over and one thread under. This specific pattern gives emphasis to the visible threads on the top side of the fabric, thus, making it easier to determine the glossy side from the dull bottom side.

Fabrics created with a satin pattern are more versatile, with better draping characteristics than other plain or more complicated weaves.

With its high lustre and elegant sheen, it is commonly associated with luxury. But yet, since it’s usually made with synthetic fibre, it’s relatively cheaper than fabrics made with natural raw materials.

Satin Fabric: The Origin

The word “satin” was coined from the word “zaitun”, which was the Arabic term for the Chinese port of Quanzhou, where it was first invented for over 2,000 years ago.

In the 12th century, Italy became the first western country to produce satin fabric and because of its luxurious characteristics, it gained popularity across Europe up until the 14th century.

However, since silk, which was then the raw material used to weave satin fabric required more resources to be exported to Europe from Asia, it made satin fabric cost more so it was reserved for aristocracy, the church, and the upper classes.

What it is Used For

Historically, satin fabric used to be a desired material for upholstery. At the Palace of Versailles, Louis XIV used to cover his ornate furniture with satin fabrics.

Until the 18th and 19th century when it was commonly used for dressmaking. It soon became sought after material used for ball gowns and sexy lingerie for upper class women.

Satin Bow Tie

Fast forward to the modern fashion scene, now that it has been widely produced using man-made material like polyester, satin fabric is now mainly used for evening gowns, shirts, corsets, ballet shoes, underwear, inner lining, wedding attires, loungewear, and accessories for both men and women.

How to Style Satin Fabrics

Since satin fabric is made with synthetic fibre, it is not ideal for base formal clothing for men like a jacket, suit, or trousers. Wearing all that in a suiting ensemble will look too flashy with all the gloss of the fabric.

Matching Satin Accessories

Man-made fabrics are also not breathable unlike other fabrics made with natural materials. That is why most gentlemen do not prefer to have it in close contact with their skin.

But the fact that it is a great thermal insulator makes it a perfect material for men’s waistcoats.

As long as you wear a dress shirt made with a breathable fabric like cotton, it will help you stay warm during winter months and stay cooler during the summer season, thus, supports healthier skin and overall comfort.

Classic Satin Accessories

So, for you not to look all clownish, it’s best for you not to take all the shine with a whole ensemble but to opt for men’s accessories to make the best out of the luxurious attributes of a satin fabric.

Invest in classic ties, bow ties, cravats, pocket squares, waistcoats, or a cummerbund. In this manner, you’ll be able to take advantage of the elegant sheen that satin fabrics give while staying sharp and sophisticated as you stay with a matte base clothing.
